Shamanism is the oldest spiritual practice known to humankind and its cosmology is based on the interconnectedness of all living things, beyond time and space. Shamanic wisdom suggests that everything in the universe is alive and has a spirit, an essence and a role to play in the web of life.
Over tens of thousands of years, shamans have developed a time-tested healing system using various techniques and many of these techniques are still alive today.
Shamanic healing is the practice by which a practitioner (a shaman, a title given to a healer in a traditional context and only by the community) brings him or herself into a state of altered consciousness, through which contact with the spirit world is possible.
Shamans will use different mediums to access the so-called “shamanic state”, the most known medium is the use of the drum or any other tool that creates a repetitive rhythmic pattern that stimulates the nervous system, resulting in a change of brainwave patterns and deeper states of consciousness. In Amazonian traditions, this change in consciousness is achieved by ingesting plant medicines and connecting with the healing spirit of the plant. In the shamanic state of consciousness, the practitioner requests healing from his or her helping spirits. This energetic assistance drives the healing process, facilitated by the practitioner’s clear intention.
When we engage in shamanic practices, we are entering the world of spirit, embracing the basic assumption that we have a spirit (a soul, primal energy, an essence, whichever term resonates with you) and that our physical/material lives have an intrinsic spiritual counterpart.
In shamanic tradition, every physical, emotional and psychological imbalance has a corresponding spiritual imbalance in place. This ‘spiritual imbalance’ is considered the root cause of the problem. Here, shamanic ancient techniques can be used to treat any issue we are dealing with. In essence, shamanic healing is spiritual work, which is another way of saying “energy work”. It has the potential of not only impacting our subtle energies and improving the state of our energy field: it can also be a powerful way of becoming familiar with and nourishing our own spiritual dimension.
